What is the Advanced Recycling Fee?
Some bikes and components will have will have an additional battery recycling fee added at checkout.
Per California state law, certain battery-embedded products are subject to a one-time, non-refundable Advanced Recycling Fee (ARF) at purchase, as required by California SB 1215 and administered by CalRecycle. For 2026, The fee is 1.5% of the product price, capped at $15, and will appear separately on your receipt. It is not refundable.
These fees fund state-wide collection programs, approved recyclers, transportation, and public information, ensuring products are managed responsibly rather than landfilled or exported.
How the Advanced Recycling Fee Applies:
The Advanced Recycling Fee applies to products with non-removable batteries, meaning batteries that are sealed inside a device and not designed to be removed by the user.
Examples of removable batteries:
- Slide-in or snap-in battery packs
- Bolt-on or clip-in batteries
- Separate battery packs that attach without specialized tools
Non-removable (covered) batteries:
- Sealed inside a device with no user-accessible panel
- Require breaking housing or special tools to access
- Integral to the device’s structure
